The following report is courtesy of Capt. A cooler, gloomy day today (Monday) with forecasted warmer days ahead mid week with chance of precipitation and windy conditions around Wed, Thurs. The fish are placed in downstream pens at Ernsts Lake Breeze Marina and will be fed and cared for before release in about 3 4 weeks. More green or fresher fish still being encountered then zombies. LOC Fall Salmon Derby Aug 20th September 6th Its all about water flows Water flows are the single biggest factor in encouraging upstream movements of fish during the fall, winter and spring trib seasons. Water temps for now are already in the the high 30s F on the Oak and prob going higher with the forecasted warmup thru the end of this week. The LOC started Friday and runs until September 6thLabor Day. This picture was from Saturday morning about 1 mile east of the Oak. Starting Tues, Sept. 7th, the Orleans County Boat Launch at the end of Ontario Street (east side of the river) will be closed for reconstruction. The current leader (7/13/21) in the Summer LOC Derby is Mike Paddock from Albion with a Salmon weighing in at 31.07 lb. At least whatever trib and near shore Lake Ontario trout action that is underway is not likely to experience a temp spike anytime soon. Any future accumulating snow and melt may do that. Fresh steelhead chances for late winter, early spring usually means high and stained and cold water challenging drifts. We encourage all anglers and users to follow the site rules for access and fishing on the Brookfield Power Company lands. Flows will likely just open up minus any blow out, as long as there is no significant precipitation. The highlight though, was landing everyones. Here we go on a nice warm up again for more seasonal spring like temps this week. The bite was not hot and heavy but we picked at a few steelhead as we approached the 30 line. The longer those fish stay in the overflow pool, they harder they become to get out. Point Breeze/Orleans County/east side boat launch is still closed while construction is hopefully soon to wrap up. Especially with the way the weather is proceeding. And maybe into the early spring! Over in Wilson, the recent rains actually pulled some salmon into 12 Mile Creek and salmon and trout are being caught off the piers there, as well. Well just have to wait and see if itll be a hard and fast melt or something a little more moderate and gradual. Its a semi serious band forecast to set up off Lake Erie. Best bass spots are downriver around Joseph Davis State Park and Youngstown near Fort Niagara. More then not, fish are still in good green shape. Little to no fishing pressure because of the recent events, with the few anglers out enjoying action like this for early Apr 2020 steelhead in the Oak. Look for your fishing window sooner then later whenever reasonable conditions come together. Steelhead should be spread thru the waterways and reports of a few fresh, silver browns too. And that flat downstream water on the Oak is just tougher to fish period except for good float techniques or cast/retrieve. Flow conditions right now are more like nice steelhead water and higher then typical fall flows. Any significant precipitation or melt off or runoff could bring all the trib flows right back high and off color again. Definitely breaking toward Spring so get those cold water steelhead drifts in while you can. The hope is this cold weather will be a good thing for later winter and spring steelhead action. For now most all waterways are low and clear. Flows in the Oak are one click less then medium or what you might call somewhere in between moderate and medium. Help needed for daily feeding and cleaning for steelhead and eventual release. For now, flows in the Oak are moderate and slightly stained and no icing. Look for the past holiday weekend fishing pressure to ease some likely thru this week. No prepared food will be served and the Catch and Release Fly Fishing Tourney will not take place for 2021. It wont break the drought conditions but it may just perk up the action in the area smaller tribs. Still some steelhead action hanging on in the Oak thanks to a return to good high flows without any real spike in water temps yet. Rain has been slow and steady so look for smaller area trib flows to go high and dirty probably stopping short of blown.
